Teams from 20 schools compete for top slot in eight competitions in Maa Boli Mela

Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary School, GT Road, bagged the first place, in the Multi-Media Competition held at Spring Dale Senior School, on the occasion of ‘Maa Boli Mela’ organized by Punarjyot. Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary School, Sultanwind, claimed the first position in Sufi Sangeet, while Khalsa College Senior Secondary Public School won the first position in folk singing.
Bhavan’s SL Public School and Delhi Public School were first in Debate and Poetry recitation competition, respectively. Sri Guru Nanak Dev DAV Public School, Bhikhiwind, bagged the top slot in Poster Making, while Sri Guru Harkrishan Senior Secondary School, Sultanwind, and Bhavan’s SL Public School were first in Calligraphy and Clay Pot Decoration competitions. On this occasion, 15 Punjabi teachers from different schools were honoured for their contributions towards the promotion of Punjabi as mother tongue.
Lending a competitive touch to the celebration of Punjabi as mother-tongue, twenty teams from different schools in the district competed for the top slot in eight competitions during the third ‘Maa Boli Mela’ organized by Punarjyot at Spring Dale Senior School today. The event was dedicated to late Dr Shivinder Singh Sandhu and Mrs Manveen Sandhu, who instituted the festival in 2007 to inculcate a love for Punjabi among the youth.
The premises of the school reverberated with Punjabi and ‘Punjabiat’ as students from different schools indulged in competitions including debate, Sufi Sangeet, Poetry Recitation, Folk Song, Multi-Media Presentation, Poster Making, Calligraphy and Clay Pot Decoration. Students presented cultural items including shabad, giddha, malwai giddha and qawali to mark the occasion.
Dr Paramjit Singh Sidhu, prominent Punjabi writer and HOD, Punjabi Department, Guru Nanak Dev University, presided over the event. He lauded the pioneering efforts made by the School, particularly late Dr Shivinder Singh Sandhu and Mrs Manveen Sandhu, in instituting ‘Maa Boli Mela’ as a celebration of Punjabi as mother tongue.
Rajiv Kumar Sharma, Principal, Spring Dale Senior School, said that this event aims at enabling the youth to realize the true worth of their mother tongue and enable them to take pride in it by helping them indulge in various literary activities including poetry recitation, folk songs, calligraphy and declamation. He added that the school is committed to fulfilling the dream of its founders of promoting Punjabi as mother tongue.
