Hundreds of research scholars of the Guru Nanak Dev University held a massive agitation against the varsity authorities for hiking the fee and other charges by more than six times. Raising slogans against the Vice- Chancellor, they blocked the main gate, disrupting the normal working of the varsity.
Over 300 scholars and students sat on a dharna asking the varsity authorities to roll back its decision to hike the fee structures of fellows from Rs 6,000 to Rs 38,000 in a sudden move. “Such an exorbitant hike has never been witnessed. Moreover, the varsity authorities are using coercive methods to thwart our voices,”said one of the researcher adding that they would not sit silent till their demands are met.
On seeing that the agitation was going out of control, Vice-Chancellor AS Brar issued a notice to the scholars living in the hostels to vacate their rooms at a short notice. “We will not vacate the hostels or tolerate this authoritarian attitude,” said the protestors.
They said the Punjabi University, Patiala, was charging Rs 6,500 and Panjab University, Chandigarh, Rs 3,600 from the fellows.
National Students’ Federation (NSF) state general secretary P C Sharma said such a hike was unjustified and the authorities were not even listening to the students. GNDU authorities had deployed the security personnel to control the situation but the protestors were unrelenting and said their agitation would continue. They said they first tried to meet the V-C and held a dharna in front of his office but he paid no heed.
Brar, meanwhile, said the varsity had been facing funds crunch and the fee hike was justified. He also said that the fellows would be paying the fee in installments and they were not putting a sudden burden on the students.
