Belated happy World Food day! No celebration is complete without good food. This World Food day we celebrated the safety of our food.
Our food faces the threat of genetic modification. Efforts are on to genetically modify our food crops by inserting alien genes from bacteria, viruses etc. which are potentially dangerous for our health and our environment. Unfortunately our government has been overlooking the interests of the citizens and promoting genetically-modified (GM) crops.
Greenpeace India has been fighting to safeguard our food and farming from GM crops. More recently it has been campaigning against the Biotechnology Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI) bill. [1] This bill will create abody which will single handedly approve GM crops in our country. [2] The bill can be tabled anytime in the next Parliament session.
Last month saw over 1 lakh people oppose the BRAI bill. This opposition also led to the making of the World Record with the World’s Biggest Baingan Bharta, a symbol of opposition to GM crops and BRAI [3] Last Sunday which was also the World Food day saw Delhiites along with Greenpeace make a gigantic art with a message for the government; Yes to safe food, No to BRAI. People in Bangalore also got together to share and spread the message of safe food.
Though public pressure stopped the commercial release of GM Bt brinjal last year, [4] there are 74 GM crops under various stages of research and they need to be stopped. Food safety is crucial to our health and that our future generations.
