The three-day Central Board of School Education (CBSE) North Zone Hockey Championship being hosted by Spring Dale Senior School, took off to a grand start today.
Youth Akali Dal Patron Bikram Singh Majithia presided over the inaugural function held in the school premises and unfurled the Central Board of School Education (CBSE) flag.
Majithia dedicated this event to late Dr Shivinder Singh Sandhu, who was the force behind the institution of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Academy and Baba Bhila Singh Hockey Academy for the promotion of the national sport among youth in rural areas.
Majithia urged the educational institutions and other organisations in the region to take initiatives to promote hockey, the pride of Punjab, by money and efforts
into reviving India's national sport. "Abhinav Bindra, Sania Mirza and Saina Nehwal have proved that India possesses talent.
The need of the hour is to locate and nurture it," he said. Principal, Spring Dale Senior School, Rajiv Kumar Sharma, said that revival of hockey in Punjab was a dream of late Dr Shivinder Singh Sandhu, which the school intended to fulfill. Stating that two years ago the school had hosted Central Board of School Education (CBSE) National Hockey and Judo Championship, he added that the school was committed to the promotion of hockey in the region because of which it regularly hosted such events.
S S Sandhu, Chairman, Spring Dale Educational Society, blessed the players and urged them to put in their best efforts in the game, while Dr Kirat Sandhu Cheema, Director, Spring Dale Educational Society, urged them to play the game with utmost sincerity and team spirit.
A dance presentation further kept thje students well motivated. Various schools of the region participated in the championship.
