IT’S not only drugs and land mafia that are trapping the residents of the city. They are slipping into the quick-rich trap of online companies that lure them to invest with them for hefty dividends. But a large number of residents, who claimed to have invested a lot of time and money in online money-making ventures, are regretting big time.
They rue that they have not been paid the amount due to them despite having crossed the level of pay-outs prescribed by these websites.
However, regardless of the fact that several people have already been duped, the number of those getting in the trap is only soaring by the day.
Sources said those who had been duped also include housewives and college and university students.
City resident Rajendra Madaan, who had invested heavily in one such online venture, said the site that he had subscribed to required him to process mails. He said for this effort, he was to be paid a huge sum, which never reached him despite sending several reminders to the site concerned. “The loss that I had incurred amounts to several lakhs,” he says.
Paramjit Kaur (name changed), a housewife, says her desire to earn extra cash online made her subscribe to a site, promising to do all the work for her against the payment of a few dollars.
“They had promised to give me my own online business, pledged to build my down-line and ensure fat paychecks every two weeks as a part of the get-rich-quick formula offered by them. Several months have passed since, but I am yet to see the money,” she claims.
Advocate P C Sharma, who deals with such cases, says he came across around 12 such cases every month. “People often ask me to help them get their payments. These sites offer lucrative deals that are hard to ignore and subscribers get into the trap without verifying their credibility,” he says.
